I like to hear my client’s stories about why they decided to go natural. I’ve heard everything from horror stories with severe hair loss to those just experimenting because they see the growth other’s have experienced.
Why did you go natural? Hoping for longer hair? Do you need to eliminate your dry scalp? See how long you could grow your hair? Because you must choose between a relaxer and color? Why did you go natural? More than likely you were moved to go natural for one or many reasons.

Steaming natural hair is a method of deep conditioning that improves the health of your hair and scalp, creates more defined curls, detangles, and restores balance. All these benefits prevent your hair from becoming a ball of frizz at the thought of moisture in the air. To prepare your hair for steaming as a pre-poo, massage your favorite oil(s) into your scalp and sit under the steamer for 20 - 30 minutes. Wash day is a big deal when you have natural hair. I find myself mentally preparing days before I even get started. The biggest question for me is "when will I have the time and the energy to detangled, shampoo, condition, detangle again and style my natural hair at the same time. Well, rarely do they all happen at once. In my natural hair regimen, each event has it's own special day. The summer before I entered high school my mom finally allowed me to get a hair relaxer. I had been wanting so badly to wear my hair in all the trending styles. Up until then my hair was naturally curly, never altered, not even with the heat of a blow dryer. My hair had always been long, thick, and curly. Even though I wanted a relaxer, it was more out of the desire to fit in rather than hatred for my hair. I had always received positive messages about my hair while growing up.
Learning to love your natural hair goes much deeper than the surface. Wearing your natural hair becomes a journey of cultivating a closer connection with yourself. To make the journey more enjoyable, give more consideration to the transition. I learned of William Bridges work on Managing Transitions from a fellow creative entrepreneur. His definition of transition helps with understanding the struggle women experience when transitioning to natural hair. |
