Conditioning can be the most important step in your natural hair regimen.
Taking your time at this step of the process can make the biggest difference in the appearance, manageability, softness, and shine of your natural hair.
I'm going to share a few tips that may add an extra step, but are well worth the time and effort.
1) Towel dry your hair after shampooing to remove excess water BEFORE you apply conditioner.
2) Separate your hair into 4 equal sections.
This way you are more likely to apply conditioner evenly and give attention to the top (middle) section of your hair which is often missed because it is hard to see when you do your own hair.
3) Comb conditioner through your hair.
This is where the real magic happens. Apply conditioner to each section liberally with your hands. Depending on how tangled your hair is move to a beach comb, then a paddle brush to make sure all strands are coated with conditioner. A high quality product is key to maintaining moisture. My favorite is Kera Care Humecto Creme Conditioner. In addition to softening, making hair more manageable, and creating shinier curls, it helps natural hair fight frizz.
4) Leave your conditioner on overnight.
Sometimes shampooing is all we have the energy to do in one sitting. It is okay to take your time applying conditioner and let it sit until the next time you shower to rinse conditioner. I don't recommend going past 24hours. You can over condition and cause your hair appear dull and feel dry. Find your sweet spot and take the liberty to rest between shampoo and condition so you can give each step 100%.
5) Rinse thoroughly with cool water.
I think we all know this by now, but I'm repeating because this simple step is easily forgotten and really seals the deal on shine. Cold water causes the cuticle (outer) layer to restrict and lay flat reflecting light and making hair appear more shiny.
These tips tor maximizing shine also help prevent breakage and make natural hair more manageable. Proper planning and patience are key to taking advantage of these tips. Let me know in the comments how your hair responds to this new routine. I hope you enjoy!
